What Would Happen If You Use Your Vacuum Cleaner To Suck Up Water?

Vacuuming is an easy, affordable and efficient method of keeping any premise clean and dust free. However, in order to ensure the optimum performance and long life of a vacuum cleaner, it is important to use it as per the specified guidelines. Most importantly, you need to avoid using the appliance to pick up substances that might damage it in any manner.

Topping the list of substances that should not be cleaned using a standard domestic vacuum cleaner is water. Trying to suck up water from any damp surface with the help of a vacuum cleaner can not only cause extensive damage to the device but can even put your life and the lives of those in touch with the damp area at great risk.

Most standard vacuum cleaners are not designed for sucking up even a small quantity of water. That is why using them for such tasks can result in one or all of the following scenarios.

  • The cleaner will be short circuited due to the internal wiring getting fused.
  • The water might get into the vacuum bag and mix with any accumulated dust and dirt to form clogs and block the cleaner.
  • The water might damage the motor and fan of the cleaner and cause it to become dead.
  • The current passing through the cleaner might be conducted across the entire area where the water is spread leading to the electrocution of people present there.

In view of the above facts, it is quite understandable and advisable to not use a regular vacuum cleaner for sucking up water.

However, having said that, you should also be aware of the fact that there are specific vacuum cleaners available in the market that can be used for sucking up water. These cleaners are generally known as wet/dry vacuums and are designed to suck up water from a surface without causing any damage to the cleaner or the person operating it.
